“Lucky” Shauna Searches for Wheel of Fortune Namesake

Kick-Off to Documentary, Social Media Campaign, and Fundraising to Help Search

99 °F

Washington, DC – Monday, August 1, 2011. Local resident Shauna Dillavou and a team of friends take the second step in an identity campaign and start the filming of a documentary in an effort to find Shauna’s namesake – a Wheel of Fortune winner on the date Shauna was born. This is a journey that will end in Los Angeles, featuring stops in Toronto, Iowa and New Mexico, and Mexico. The project was funded through Kickstarter and will result in a documentary about the search and about the “lucky” life of this D.C. resident and the hopeful meeting of the two Shaunas.

With no connection to the Dillavou family, the winning contestant on November 28, 1979, was unknowingly made the namesake of a small-town Iowa girl. After years of hard work in pursuit of success, criss-crossing the globe, this D.C. resident is setting out to find a piece of her past in hopes to both answer a life-long question of “who is this Shauna I’m named after” but also to help renew strained ties to her own family.

“My mom always told me my name was ‘lucky’; in looking at the obstacles overcome and at the fortunate life I have today, I believe that I am lucky,” said Dillavou. “It’s my hope that finding my namesake will answer some questions I’ve always had, as well as to bring me back with my beginnings.”

To help Shauna, a group of local friends has pulled together to see Dillavou through to her goals. A project known as “The Luckiest Shauna” got underway about a month ago with the launch of a website (www.theluckiestshauna.com) and a fundraising effort to help fund the effort. Those interested were encouraged to “like” the project via Facebook at and to follow them on Twitter, at the handle @luckiest_shauna. To date, The Luckiest Shauna has raised $8,200.00 and has over 500 followers.

“What started as a story I told at cocktail parties became, with the encouragement of wonderful and talented friends, a documentary idea,” said Dillavou.

The team will make 30 stops on the road trip and are looking to the online community for suggestions on “must-sees”, food venues and are game for a tweet-up. The following is a link to the road map and schedule (forthcoming). Interviews with Dillavou are available upon request.
